Violacein, a selective shield from the rainforest

Amazia™ is a bioactive obtained from the secondary metabolism of a tropical bacterium. The proprietary, non-genetically modified wild-type strain was isolated from the rainforest by the research team of Active Cells Biotechnology and is reproduced by precision fermentation in Italy. After fermentation the violacein is harvested by natural extraction and purified by fine microfiltration.

In nature violacein acts as a selective shield. In the skin Amazia™ works the same way: it targets blemish-causing bacteria while leaving beneficial flora intact, it reduces the inflammatory mediator TNF-alpha and it stimulates autophagy, the skin’s own cell-recycling process.

Amazia™

Beauty bioprospecting, produced by fermentation

Biodiversity is the source of Amazia™: a wild-type microorganism found in the rainforest, preserved in its original form and reproduced in the laboratory instead of harvested from nature. Precision fermentation turns that discovery into a consistent ingredient with a natural origin index of 1 under ISO 16128, COSMOS approval and a biodegradable profile.

What makes Amazia™ different from classic anti-blemish actives is selectivity: it inhibits the bacteria behind blemishes at concentrations that leave the beneficial flora alone.

Frequently asked questions about Amazia™

The questions formulators ask most about Amazia™: what it is, use levels, clinical results and certifications.

The strain is grown by precision fermentation to maximise the natural secretion of violacein. The violacein is then harvested by natural extraction and purified by fine microfiltration.

Amazia™ is produced by Active Cells Biotechnology in Italy and distributed by Azeco Cosmeceuticals.

No. Amazia™ is produced from a wild-type, non-genetically modified strain that was isolated from the rainforest by the research team and is reproduced in laboratories in Italy.

Violacein is a violet pigment produced by certain bacteria. In nature it acts as a selective shield, for example for tropical amphibians. Amazia™ uses this molecule as the core of a targeted active for blemish-prone skin.

The INCI name is Propylene glycol, Violacein. Amazia™ is a viscous, dark violet to blue liquid that is soluble in glycols, water dispersible and emulsifiable.

Amazia™ is a violacein-based active for blemish-prone skin. Violacein is produced by fermentation from a wild-type, non-genetically modified bacterial strain isolated from the rainforest. Amazia™ is produced by Active Cells Biotechnology and distributed by Azeco.

Store Amazia™ at 25°C ± 5, protected from light, in tightly closed containers. Under these conditions the shelf life is 18 months.

Amazia™ is a dark violet to blue liquid. At higher use levels the violet tint becomes visible in the finished product, and many brands use it as a visual signature.

Amazia™ is suitable for skin care, body care, hair care and sun care. The brochure includes two reference formulations: A-Pure Defense, a cream for acne-prone skin, and Violet Pureness Drops, a concentrated serum.

Amazia™ is soluble in glycols, dispersible in water and emulsifiable, so it can be used in serums, emulsions and gels.

The suggested use level is 0.2 to 2%. The clinical study was performed with a cream containing 2% Amazia™.

In microbiological tests, Amazia™ inhibited C. acnes, S. aureus and S. hominis at low concentrations while sparing the probiotic strains L. plantarum and L. casei. Benzoyl peroxide and common organic acids do not show this selectivity.

In the self-assessment after 28 days, 85% of the volunteers reported an improvement in skin imperfections, 95% a healthier-looking complexion and 100% smoother, more even skin.

Autophagy is the cell's own recycling process, which helps maintain cellular balance and skin integrity. In vitro, Amazia™ stimulated autophagy in human keratinocytes by 14%.

Yes. In the clinical study, 55% of the volunteers showed an improvement in the redness of inflammatory lesions after 28 days. In vitro, Amazia™ reduced the inflammatory mediator TNF-alpha in keratinocytes by 38%.

Microbiological tests show that Amazia™ inhibits bacteria linked to blemishes, such as C. acnes and S. aureus, while sparing beneficial probiotic strains. This selective action sets it apart from benzoyl peroxide and common organic acids.

In a 28-day half-face study with 20 volunteers with oily, acne-prone skin, a cream with 2% Amazia™ reduced the number of blemishes by 30% compared with placebo, and 55% of the volunteers showed an improvement in redness.
