Frequently asked questions about Lady Purple®

The questions formulators ask most about Lady Purple®: the microalga, INCI, use levels, clinical results and certifications.

Lady Purple® is produced by Active Cells Biotechnology in Italy, a company with more than 30 years of expertise in microbiology and enzymology, and is distributed by Azeco Cosmeceuticals.

Phycobiliproteins are water-soluble proteins that microalgae use to capture light for photosynthesis. In Lady Purple®, phycoerythrin is the most important one: it gives the extract its pink colour, neutralises free radicals and helps give the skin radiance.

Lady Purple® is made from Porphyridium biomass that the farming unit does not use. Instead of going to waste, this by-product is turned into a high-value cosmetic ingredient through an enzymatic process that avoids harsh solvents and runs on low energy.

The microalgae are grown by a dedicated farming unit within the same group as the producer, using sustainable practices that reduce emissions and sequester CO2 from the atmosphere. The whole supply chain is controlled and local.

The pink colour comes from phycoerythrin, the water-soluble protein that captures light and neutralises free radicals. It gives finished products a vibrant pink hue, which many brands use as a visual signature.

The INCI name is Aqua (Water), Porphyridium cruentum extract, 1,2-Hexanediol. Lady Purple® is a viscous, water-soluble liquid with a pink to fuchsia colour.

Lady Purple® is an enzymatic extract of the red microalga Porphyridium cruentum, made from upcycled biomass. It combines phycoerythrin and polysaccharides in one multifunctional active that supports anti-pollution protection, hydration, radiance and a balanced skin microbiome.

Store Lady Purple® at 25°C ± 5, protected from light. Under these conditions the shelf life is 18 months.

Lady Purple® is suitable for skin care, body care, hair care and sun care. Typical concepts are anti-pollution creams and serums, microbiome-balancing products, makeup bases, anti-ageing products and clean beauty lines.

Yes. The brochure includes a Daily cream, a sorbet cream with a fresh and silky texture that works as a makeup base, and an Antipollution Purple serum. Both use 10% Lady Purple®.

Yes. Lady Purple® is a viscous liquid that is soluble in water, which makes it easy to use in serums, gels, emulsions and water-based sprays.

Add Lady Purple® in the cool-down phase, below 40 to 45°C, while stirring slowly. The reference formulations are adjusted to a final pH of 5 to 6.

The suggested use level is 2 to 5%. The clinical studies were performed with 5% Lady Purple®, and the reference formulations in the brochure use up to 10%.

At the end of the 28-day clinical study, more than 90% of the volunteers rated the Lady Purple® cream positively on all aspects of the questionnaire.

In the 28-day clinical study, periocular wrinkle values shifted towards those of younger skin. On average, the skin looked 2.8 years younger after 28 days of use with a cream containing 5% Lady Purple®.

In the superoxide radical scavenging assay, Lady Purple® at 5% neutralised 39.5% of the superoxide radicals generated, compared with the reference antioxidant Trolox.

Yes. In human keratinocytes exposed to UV, treatment with Porphyridium phycoerythrin kept the levels of free radicals, glutathione and lipid peroxidation unchanged, which confirms its protective activity against UV-induced oxidative stress.

In vitro, keratinocytes were exposed to urban dust, a mix of pollutants that mimics city air. Lady Purple® reduced the production of free radicals in a clear, dose-dependent and significant way, by 9% at a concentration of 1%.

In vitro at 5%, Lady Purple® increased the growth of beneficial lactobacilli by 4 log, while the growth of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa decreased by 1 and 3 log. This helps maintain a balanced skin microbiome.

In a 28-day half-face study with 22 women aged 40 to 65, a cream with 5% Lady Purple® improved skin radiance by 14.5% and reduced wrinkle depth by 13.6% compared with placebo. A serum with 5% increased hydration by 33% and elasticity by 7.4% after 10 hours.
