September is Alopecia Awareness Month: the role of scalp care
Losing hair is normal: most people shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day. Significant hair loss or thinning, however, can have a big impact on self-confidence. September is Alopecia Awareness Month, a moment to raise awareness about hair loss in all its forms.
Hair loss and hair thinning
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition that requires medical care. The most common form of hair thinning, however, is androgenetic: sensitivity of the hair follicle to DHT, a hormone derived from testosterone, gradually makes the hair thinner and shortens the growth phase. Hair thinning can also be related to stress, nutrition or other factors.
Azelaic acid in scalp care
Azelaic acid is a well-known inhibitor of 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT. This mechanism is the basis for its use in cosmetic scalp and hair care that supports thicker, healthier-looking hair. In combination with zinc and vitamin B6, published research suggests a synergistic effect. For scalp and hair care, 3 to 10% azelaic acid is recommended.
