April is Rosacea Awareness Month
April is Rosacea Awareness Month. It was established to raise awareness about rosacea, a chronic and widespread facial skin condition that is estimated to affect more than 415 million people worldwide.
About rosacea
Rosacea mostly affects the face and shows up as redness, small red bumps and fine visible blood vessels. The exact cause is not known, but experts point to several factors:
- genetics, as rosacea runs in families
- a response of the immune system to certain bacteria
- higher levels of the peptide cathelicidin, which can cause inflammation and redness
- Demodex mites, which are found in larger numbers on the skin of people with rosacea
Rosacea itself requires medical care, and most treatments are pharmaceutical. For cosmetic products, however, azelaic acid is one of the few actives with a long track record for skin prone to rosacea.
How azelaic acid supports redness-prone skin
Azelaic acid helps reduce the look of redness and bumps, and its antioxidant activity reduces the formation of reactive oxygen species in a dose-dependent way. It is gentle and well tolerated, which is essential for sensitive, reactive skin. For products for rosacea-prone skin, roughly 5 to 15% azelaic acid is commonly used.
