July is Hyperpigmentation and Melasma Awareness Month
July is Hyperpigmentation and Melasma Awareness Month. Uneven skin tone affects people of all skin types and can have a real impact on confidence. Understanding how it develops helps brands create better products.
What is hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is the appearance of darker patches on the skin, caused by an increased production of melanin. Sun exposure, hormonal changes, genetics and inflammation, for example after a blemish, can all trigger it.
What is melasma?
Melasma is a form of hyperpigmentation that appears as brown or grey patches on the face. Hormonal changes and sun exposure are the main triggers.
Supporting an even skin tone
Consistent sun protection is essential for anyone with an uneven skin tone. In addition, skin care with brightening actives such as licorice extract, tranexamic acid and azelaic acid can help reduce the look of dark spots. Results take time and patience.
Azelaic acid for a more even tone
Azelaic acid inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that triggers melanin production. This helps reduce the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin tone. For brightening products, 10 to 15% azelaic acid is recommended, at a pH between 5.5 and 6.5.
